John Rattenbury joined the Taliesin Fellowship in 1950. Over the course of nine years, he worked on sixty of Frank Lloyd Wright's projects including the Guggenheim Museum, the Gammage Auditorium, and the Marin County Civic Center. Following Wright's death in 1959, Rattenbury helped establish Taliesin Architects, where he continues to serve as a principal architect.
The Kessler residence, which still stands today, faithfully interprets Wright's architectural design principles, unifying the dramatic residential interiors with the natural surroundings. Rattenbury served as the principal architect on the project and designed all of the interior furnishings, including the built-in and freestanding furniture and lighting. He collaborated with Taliesin architect and interior designer John deKoven Hill for the design of the furniture, including the hassocks and table presently offered. Rattenbury also consulted with Mrs. Frank Lloyd Wright, who was responsible for selecting the color schemes and fabrics for the Kessler commission.
