The present sketch was probably made in the fields around the Perthshire village of Comrie, in 1902 when Peploe painted a number of small panels. Stanley Cursiter described the difference between Peploe's landscape studies at this time and the artist's still lifes: 'In "Comrie, Spring" the village houses are seen through a screen of flickering foliage very different indeed from the austerity of the groups produced in his studio.'
