the bald monk seated upon a raised pedestal with his left hand resting on his bent left knee, the right hand holding a red scroll, dressed in a green loose-fitting robe with molded lotus flower detailing along the hems, the pensive face with narrow almond-shaped eyes inset with beads, between a wrinkled forehead and pursed full red lips framed by pendent earlobes, the reverse incised with an inscription

The inscription on this piece mentions the names two Lu Family members as beneficiaries from the village.
This luohan is one from a group of sixteen luohans made for a temple in northern Shanxi Province. Several ones from this group are illustrated in Ancient Chinese Sculptural Treasures: Carvings in Wood, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, June 1998, nos. 16-25.
