Catalogue Note
António Teixeira Lopes was the son of a sculptor, José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes. António began his career working in the shipyards of Gaia, creating sculptures to decorate the ships being built. He went on to study under the painter-professor João Correia at the Academia de S. Lázaro in Porto, whilst financing his studies by making small devotional religious sculptures.
He was given the commission for a statue of D. Pedro V which was erected in the centre of the Praça da Batalha in Porto. He also received a government funded bursary to study at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris.
A large scale marble version of the present model, dated 1890, is in the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, Porto, Portugal.
