Catalogue Note

Cumberworth has translated into bronze one of the best known paintings by his celebrated contemporary Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). Ingres' Grande Odalisque, painted in 1814, is in the Louvre Museum. Although Cumberworth's sculptural version faces in the oposite direction, left rather than right, several details are copied directly from the painting, such as the feathered fan and the three bracelets on the Odalisque's left arm. The present model appears to be the larger of the two bronze reductions cast by Susse. Cumberworth also created a clothed version, Odalisque couchée habillée; this too was edited by the Susse foundry.
