Catalogue Note

Dubois' Michelangelesque seated figure of Méditation was one of four bronze figures modelled for the corners of the ambitious monument erected in Nantes Cathedral to General Juchault de Lamoricière (1879). The others were La charité, Le courage militaire and La foi. Dubois also executed the General's marble statue, the bronze bas-reliefs and marble medallions which were shown together at the Exposition Universelle of 1878. Barbedienne cast bronze reductions of the corner figures in five sizes, of which Méditation is the rarest to appear on the market.  Rodin's Thinker was inspired by it.
