Catalogue Note
Gilbert Bayes joined the Royal Academy Schools in 1896 where he was taught by three great exponents of the New Sculpture: Thomas Brock, Harry Bates and George Frampton. Frampton became Bayes' greatest influence and a life-long friend. In 1899 Bayes won the Academy's Gold Medal and a traveling scholarship which enabled him to continue his studies in Paris and Italy.
The Greek Dancer was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1905. Other versions are in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, and the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull.
