This may be the landowner, collier owner and agriculturalist William Alexander Wooler (1813–91) of Sadberge Hall, Darlington. Wooler was the founder of the Darlington Conservative Association and also of the conservative newspaper The North-Eastern Independent . Four letters by Wooler to Darwin dating from between February 1861 and December 1868 are recorded in the Darwin Correspondence Online Database. These all discuss the behaviour of various animals and plants.
