Beryl Bainbridge, five times shortlisted for the Booker Prize and three times winner of the Whitbread Prize, was awarded a DBE in 2000. She is not known as an artist, although she has stated that the author who most influenced her was D.H. Lawrence. The painting shows a seated clothed man next to a standing female nude in a field. An upper panel mounted on the lower panel creates a layered effect.
