Catalogue Note

Lady Ela Russell (1854-1936) was the elder daughter of Francis Charles Hastings Russell (1819-1891), 9th Duke of Bedford whose lineage descends from William the Conqueror.  Lady Russell was responsible for some historically interesting interiors in mixed media in several of the rooms at Woburn Abbey, including the State Saloon, the Long Gallery and the Holland Library. These were executed during the 1880’s.

This set of pictures depict members of the Russell family and their dogs, based on details of portraits painted over the centuries including those by Sir Anthony Van Dyck and Sir Joshua Reynolds which hang at Woburn Abbey.
