Antoni Clavé

Clavé first met the artist Pedro Flores at the Haras Camp near Perpignan in January 1939, where Clavé was briefly interned during his march into France with the Republican Army. It was only in the following year, however, that a close friendship between the two developed when they met again in Paris at a reunion of close friends also fleeing Barcelona. Both artists remained in Paris until the end of the German occupation and it is during this period that this particular portrait was produced. After the war, in 1946, Clavé and Flores participated together in an exhibition of Spanish painters held in Prague.
