Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of Thomas Kemp.  On 12th July 1806 he married his first wife, Frances, daughter of Sir Francis Baring, 1st Bt.  On 26th November 1832 he married his second wife Frances Margaretta, daughter of Charles Watkin John Shakerley of Somerford, Cheshire.  He served as M.P. for Lewes, 1811-1816, and Arundel 1823-1826, and secondly for Lewes, 1826-37.
