Catalogue Note

Jean-Charles Develly was an artist who worked predominately at the Manufacture de Sevres and was one of the best known and most talented restorers and painters of porcelain in the reign of Louis-Philippe in France, often working together with Brongniart.  He also collaborated with important furniture-makers of the time and often used classical literary themes as inspiration for his creations.

The present painting relates with some differences to a drawing by Develly executed in 1820 (lavish and gouache; Sceaux, Musée de l’île de France).
