Catalogue Note
Jeanne-Philiberte Ledoux was the daughter of the architect and writer Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. She received her artistic training from Jean-Baptiste Greuze and painted many variants of his work. The present portrait is based on Greuze's composition, The Mathematician. Several versions of the composition are known, including one in the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, another sold at Sotheby's, New York, June 9, 1983, from the Estate of Mr. and Mrs. Kay Kimball, Fort Worth, Texas and another one, which was sold by Sotheby's, New York, on January 14, 1988, lot 212.
