Important masque, Luluwa, République Démocratique du Congo

Ce masque frontal nkota présente un visage allongé aux traits puissants : haut front bombé structuré par une nervure médiane se prolongeant jusqu'à l'extrémité du large nez triangulaire, yeux aux paupières proéminentes sculptées sur le plan concave de la face,  bouche ouverte aux lèvres saillantes dessinant un losange, long menton prognathe. L'épaisse patine noire, brillante sur les reliefs, est animée par des lignes gravées rehaussées d'aplats de couleur claire, soulignant les contours de la face concave et dessinant de larges cercles sur le sommet de la tête.

Les masques provenant de la partie du Kasaï oriental habitée par les Kété méridionaux et les nombreux groupes formant l'entité Luluwa sont très rares.

Ils sont essentiellement connus à travers trois exemplaires :
- le premier dans la collection Barbier Mueller (inv. 1026-30, reproduit dans Hahner, Kecskési et Vajda, 1997 : 205, n° 84) provenant des anciennes collections André Lhote - avant 1930 - et Olivier Le Corneur, attribué aux Bakwa Ndolo, sous-groupe de Luluwa.
- le second, conservé au musée de Tervuren (Tervuren, 1995 : 141, n° 106), référencé dès 1911, est attribué aux Luluwa ou aux Kété du sud-est.  
- le troisième appartenant à la collection du Professeur Werner Muensterberger, New York.

Leur rareté, ajoutée à un contexte ethnique complexe, explique la difficulté d'une attribution précise. Ce masque a été attribué aux Luluwa par analogie formelle et stylistique avec les têtes des statuettes de cette origine. 

Les masques nkota, censés personnifier l'esprit d'un défunt, sont avant tout associés à l'initiation des jeunes garçons (Petridis in Tervuren, 1995 : 330-331).

An important Luluwa mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Masks from the eastern part of the Kasai, inhabited by the southern Bakete and numerous groups forming the Luluwa entity are very rare.

These masks are known mainly through three examples:
·       The first, belonging to the Barbier Mueller collection (Inv. 1026-30, reproduced in Hahner, Keckési and Vajda, 1997 : 205, n° 84) from the former collections of André Lhote – prior to 1930 – and Olivier Le Corneur, attributed to the Bakwa Ndolo, a sub-group of the Luluwa.
·       The second, in the Tervuren Museum (Tervuren, 1995 : 141, n° 106), referenced as of 1911, attributed to the Luluwa or the Bakete of the south-east.
·       The third in the collection of Professor Werner Muensterberger, New York.

The rarity of these masks, added to a complex ethnic context, explains the difficulty in attributing them with accuracy.  We can attribute the offered mask to the Luluwa based on a formal and stylistic comparison with the heads of figures from the same origin. Due to the lack of information at the time the mask was collected, it is impossible to locate its origin more precisely.
