Catalogue Note
A fine Maori figure, New Zealand
The holes at the back and top of the head identify this statue as a poutokomanawa, an architectural ornament attached to the central pillars - pou – supporting the roof-ridge of the chief's house. It represents an ancestor, reproducing his tattoos.
According to Neich (personal note, September 2005), this statue was probably carved somewhere between the late 18th and early 19th century.
The traces left by traditional tools confirm the age of the piece.
See Mead (1984: 213, no. 118) for a comparable statue at the National Museum of New Zealand, Wellington.
