with broad straight blade cut with a wide shallow near full-length fuller on each face and retaining traces of an inscription, iron hilt comprising slightly down-turned cross-piece of tapering rectangular section, pierced with a cross at the tips (cracked in the middle on one side), flattened tulip-shaped pommel, and later wooden grip bound with string
Catalogue Note
A sword with a related blade and a very similar cross-piece was discovered in the River Witham and is now preserved in the City Museum Lincoln. Another, with a blade of falchion type and with a strikingly similar cross-piece was discovered at Thorpe, and is now preserved in the Castle Museum, Norwich. See R.E.Oakeshott 1964, pl.26A & pl.26B.
