Catalogue Note

Foschi was a pupil of Andrea del Sarto, and then in the latter half of the 1530s worked on several projects under Pontormo.  The influence of both these artists is detectable in the present picture, which was probably painted in the late 1530s or early 1540s, before Foschi became interested in the more refined style of Bronzino.  Foschi used the same cartoon for a painting that was sold at Christie's, London, on December 6, 1946 , lot 24, (as Andrea del Sarto).
