Sculptress, art patron and founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's passion for art was legendary. Her father was railroad tycoon Baron Cornelius Vanderbilt II. She studied at the Arts Students League and created numerous public monuments throughout the world.
