Catalogue Note
The artist discussed this painting in a letter dated New York, June 16, 1950 which states: "The background of this painting is my theme. This picturesque legend that some day soon, her price will come from heaven, riding on a white horse with silver trappings. The horse's hoofs in the angel's palms, he will be carried through the air till he touches green pastures, where she stands in contemplation. This dream seems to descend like gentle rain on the Chinese figure which I have placed in the center of my composition, perfumed and robed, she waits for her prince to come. The listless palm trees catch the breeze above, and there are branches trying to reach for water in the iridescent tass. Oh! come my prince, come soon. There is no breeze to cool the heat of my brow." A copy of this letter will accompany the lot.
