Catalogue Note

According to Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., "Either this painting or cat. 397 was probably on display at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., from June 7, 1882, until March 28, 1883.  The curator of the Corcoran Gallery recorded in his journal on June 3, 1882, that 'Heade, artist sent up his large painting of a scene of the California coast, & a small flower & shell picture--both very good.'  The Corcoran archives contain a letter (March 1883) from Heade asking his agent (Mr. Calvert) to box 'my picture of flowers in shell . . . and send to G. Reichard/ 226 Fifth Avenue/ New York'" (The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade: A Critical Analysis and Catalogue Raisonné, New Haven, Connecticut, 2000, p. 300).
