Catalogue Note

A letter from the artist affixed to the reverse reads: "Papilio Turnus, a native of North America. The caterpillar feeds on the leaves of the tulip tree (Iiriodendrum Tulipifera).  The Chrysalis is shown on the trunk of the tree awaiting its transformation to the future butterfly.  The small butterfly on a leaf is Argus Pseudo-Argioulus, also found in all parts of the United States.  Painted for Mrs. Coleman by Titian R. Peale, March 1878."
