The portraits of Ann Woodward Haven and John Haven were commissioned by their son, John Appleton Haven, and were painted in Boston in 1824.  The portraits remained in the family and passed down through the generations to John Haven, the sitters’ grandson.  The Bulletin of The New York Public Library announced the acquisition in 1924 stating, "John Haven came of a long line of public spirited citizens of eastern Massachusetts.  His father, Samuel, was for fifty one years minister of the South Church at Portsmouth, where John was born April 8, 1766.  He began his business career as a shipmaster, and later became a member of the firm N.A. & J. Haven, merchants" (October 1924, p. 731).
