Catalogue Note
Joseph Lindon Smith was closely associated with the Harvard University/Museum of Fine Arts, Boston joint archaeological expeditions in Egypt during the first half of the 20th century. Named Honorary Curator of Egyptian Art at the MFA Boston in 1927 in recognition of his services, Smith depicted works which could not be removed from Egypt, such as wall carvings and sculpture. The paintings, often produced in full scale, were meant to record and preserve the ancient works and render them accessible to an American audience.
