Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1960.

An émigré from her native Germany, Duckworth arrived in Britain in 1936 and trained as a sculptor, latterly at Central School of Arts and Crafts, London (1956-1958), where she taught from 1959 to 1964. In 1964 she moved to America, initially to teach at the University of Chicago, and since then has established herself as one of the leading ceramic artists in the U.S.A., in addition to still working with bronze and stone.

The present small sculpture, dating from her period at the Central School, shows very clearly the influences to which she had been exposed, and in particular to the work of William Turnbull, a fellow Central teacher.
