Catalogue Note
Minton set sail for Jamaica in September 1950 having arranged for Francis Bacon to cover his teaching responsibilities at the Royal College of Art. The Caribbean landscape was to have a profound effect on the artist, resulting in 38 watercolours and 4 oils that were exhibited at the Lefevre Gallery the following year. In an article written for Vogue, November 1951, Minton remarked, 'the colour of the Jamaican landscape is that of coloured inks, of over-ripe fruit, acid lemon yellows, magentas, viridians sharp like a discord. The vegetation, intricate, speckled and enormous, seems to grow before the eyes, bursting with sap, throttling itself in coils towards the sun.'
