Catalogue Note

Probably painted near Luppitt, Devon in the latter part of 1924, The Two Ash Trees is one of Bevan’s final group of oil paintings. Whilst the angularity of the earlier landscape work is still discernible, the paintings of the 1922-25 period demonstrate a new serenity and harmony. Whilst the pictorial structure and use of colour remains a key element in the success of these later paintings, the subtlety with which it is achieved is notable.
