Catalogue Note
Joan Warburton attended the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing between 1937 and 1940 alongside Lucian Freud. Both students maintained close allegiances with the directors of the school, Morris and Lett-Haines after their departure, but while Freud went on to recieve global recognition, Warburton (despite exhibiting at the Royal Academy seven times between 1947 and 1970), has fallen into relative obscurity. This portrait of Freud at sixteen years old, executed just before his departure for North Wales in early 1940, remains an important document of the relationship between the two artists during this pivotal period.
