Born in Beijing, Zhao studied under the great master Lin Fengmian at the Hangzhou National Academy of Fine Arts, where he acquired a teaching position upon his graduation in 1941.  In 1947, he left for Paris where he befriended many well-known dealers and artists.  His friendships with Henry Michaux, Pierre Loeb, Paul Klee, Franz Kline and Jean Miro had lasting effects on his style and artistic career.   He held his first solo exhibition abroad at Galerie Crauze, Paris, in 1949.   His works were regularly exhibited during the 1950s and 1960s at Klootz Gallery in New York and Galerie de France in Paris.   Zhao is one of the most successful Chinese painters in the West. His works are much sought-after by international collectors and museums including the National Museum of History in Taipei, Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and the Albertinium Museum in Vienna.
