Catalogue Note
Situated some fifty kilometres to the west of Turin, Susa today lies on the Italian side of the Italian-French border. Its main landmark, clearly visible in Bossoli's view, is the tower of the city's cathedral, built in the eleventh century. The remains of the Roman Porta Savoia, dating from the fourth century, are visible to the left of the tower.
Two ink and wash sketches of the duomo, executed in 1853, are recorded in Ada Peyrot, Carlo Bossoli, Turin, 1974, p. 311, nos. 638 and 639.
