Catalogue Note

In this fresh, light-filled composition, Fischer has transported the timeless subject of the female nude into a truly modern setting. For these young ladies clearly belong to the turn-of-the-century leisured bourgeoisie, their standing in society given away by their colourful Japanese parasols so fashionable at the time.

Influenced by his travels to Paris in the 1870s and 1880s, and by the paintings of the French Impressionists he saw there, Fischer brought back with him a kind of painting not seen in Denmark before. Works such as this were eagerly bought up. Such was the appetite among buyers that nudes lying or cavorting on beaches became one of his most popular subjects.
