Catalogue Note

M.A. Koekkoek was the son of the famous marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and received his first painting lessons from his father. In Hilversum, where he ran a shop in painting materials, M.A. Koekkoek soon became part of a group of cattle and landscape painters. In 1837 he left for Cleves, where he studied with his brother Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, who had settled in the German town in 1834. Following the example of his brother, M.A. Koekkoek mastered the principles of Cleves Romanticism. The present lot is a great example of this. As can be seen in this wonderful landscape, Koekkoek structures nature in such a way that the eye of the beholder has to 'travel' through the landscape, admiring the many surprising effects of light and the masterful depiction of detail. In this painting, executed in 1854, M.A. Koekkoek challenges the work of his famous brother Barend Cornelis Koekkoek.
