Théodule-Augustin Ribot

The theme of a young woman with her dog, was executed several times by Ribot, often with variation in the positioning of the figures. Several are now in public museums including those in Reims and Cleveland, Ohio. All exhibit an air of quiet repose, revealing the close relationship between the dog and its caretaker. This particular painting was engraved for Georges Petit (Procédé et Impr. Georges Petit), perhaps on the occasion of the sale in 1908, or as a way to promote Ribot’s work. Other galleries active in Paris with branches in New York and London, such as the Goupil Gallery, used the same process to help sell the works of the artists they sponsored.
