CATALOGUE NOTE
Grimshaw’s moonlit views are particularly celebrated for their ability to capture complicated surfaces in a limited palette from bluish green to gray and black. Grimshaw perfected the technique of showing moonlight through clouds by applying soft glazes over patches of paint. The eeriness and stillness of this view is representative of a long period in Grimshaw’s career, in which his interest lay primarily in showing the silvery effects of moonlight on spidery tree branches, reflective puddles of water, and the competing yellow light glowing from country house windows. It was a talent through which he became justifiably famous.
