Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of John, 11th Lord Elphinstone, and his wife, Anne, daughter of 3rd Lord Ruthven of Freeland.  He served as M.P. for Stirlingshire, and was Governor of Greenwich Hospital.  In 1816 he married Catalina Paulina Alessandro.  The present work is one of a series of portrait studies which Hayter painted in preparation for his monumental composition of the “Address to the Crown in the House of Commons on 5th February 1833” which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
