It is likely that the sitter is the father of Admiral Sir Edward Buller, Bt., of Trenant Park. Sir Edward’s daughter, Anna Maria, married James Buller Fullerton Elphinstone, the father of William, 15th Lord Elphinstone, making the sitter his great-grandfather.
