Catalogue Note
The painting derives its title from a young girl in the left foreground in the act of washing her feet, at the edge of a river or pond seen in the far left foreground. To the centre and right is a group of four cows, three standing. With pollards and a hedge beyond the cattle to the right, and an open meadow with a herd of cattle in the far distance to the left.
Cooper catalogued this in his Royal Academy Appendix to My Life, Volume 2, pg. 320, as 'Sold at the Manchester Exhibition', however there is no record of it being exhibited in Manchester.
We are very grateful to Kenneth Westwood for writing this footnote.
