Description
OBSERVATIONS MADE DURING A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD ON PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, NATURAL HISTORY AND ETHIC PHILOSOPHY. London, printed for G. Robinson, 1778.
Quarto, 2 tables (1 folding), folding map; half polished calf, spine gilt in 6 compartments with raised bands.
FIRST EDITION. Forster was Cook's naturalist on his second voyage, replacing Sir Joseph Banks. He made detailed observations of the natives of the islands of the South Pacific: included here are descriptions of their customs, language and mythology as well as the status of women. He deals at length with the health and diseases of the South Sea islanders, and suggests that venereal disease was endemic to the islands in an attempt to counter the more likely conclusion that it was introduced by the earlier European explorers. The last section evaluates the steps taken to preserve the health of the sailors on the voyage, including the suggestions of James Lind.
REFERENCE
Hill, p. 109
