Though they are both spontaneous, rapidly executed studies of ships, clearly made from life, this drawing and the following lot illustrate two rather different aspects of Van de Velde's drawing style.  In general, Michael Robinson has dated this type of rather sparely drawn pen and ink study fairly late in the artist's career, around 1700;  for similar examples at Geenwich, see M.
