We are very grateful to Ellinoor Bergvelt for informing us that a very comparable sheet of studies of clerics is in the collection of the Stichting Fundatie Ploos van Amstel Knoef at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, and that the artist seems to have made use of both these study sheets in preparing his large 1810 painting of the Basilica of Constantine and Maxentius, now in a private collection in Venray (see J.A. Knip 1777-1847, exhibition catalogue, 's-Hertogenbosch, Noordbrabantsmuseum, 1977, cat. no. 28, reproduced).
