Catalogue Note

Though born in Paris, Picart moved permanently to Amsterdam in 1710, establishing himself in the city as a leading draughtsman, academician, teacher and designer of title-pages and book-illustrations. During the earlier part of the 18th century, academic figure studies such as this were being produced in considerable numbers, in the many small drawing academies and societies that were springing up throughout the Netherlands.
