Catalogue Note

Surviving paintings by Dieu are extremely scarce and it has not been possible to connect the present work.  The drawing style is, however, typical of the artist:  see Pierre Rosenberg, 'Dieu as a draughtsman,' Master Drawings, XVII, 1979, pp. 161-9, plates 33-47.
