Catalogue Note

During the 1980s Alexander Serebriakov was commissioned by Gilles de Brissac to design a series of pavillions in the style of the 'follies' of the eighteenth century to decorate the Chateau at Apremont. Inspired by a collection of works by Gian Domenico Tiepolo showing the Pulcinella, or stooges, leaving Saint Mark's square in Venice and discovering the principal landmarks of the five continents, Serebriakov produced eight large panels in tin-glazed earthenware to decorate the belvedere. This work is a study for one of the panels depicting the stooges' adventures in Africa.
