Catalogue Note
First English edition, following the American edition by a few weeks and with more inserted illustrations than the American. Presentation copy, inscribed by London to a cousin on the front free endpaper: “Dear Mab: — And now descend with me, here into the abyss, where woe cries out unavailing and God does not hear. Jack London. December 19, 1904.” Laid in is a photograph of London in a suit, sitting and leaning forward, smoking a small cigar (6 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.; 165 x 115 mm), slightly nicked at right edge.
