the besler natural history collection, handsomely illustrated. Nuremberg apothecary Basil Besler (d. 1629) established a botanical garden that enabled him to study phytology. His interest in natural history extended into other areas and he began collecting curiosities, a pursuit continued by his nephew Michael Rupert Besler (d. 1661). Botanist and physician Michael Friedrich Lochner published the present Besleriana catalogue near the end of his career, including the commentary of Johann Heinrich Lochner. Twenty-four of these plates were published earlier in Besler's Gazophylacium (1642). The Rariora exemplifies the seventeenth-century urge toward taxonomy.
