Provenance
Augustine Birrell, bookplate in volume 1
Literature
Gilson A2; Keynes Austen 2
Catalogue Note
Austen made a number of alterations for the second edition of her novel. According to Gilson, the edition "did not sell out immediately". Egerton was still advertising it as "new" in November 1815, and Jane Austen received a royalty payment as late as March 1817. The present binding, not noted by Gilson, suggests that sheets were still being bound and distributed wholesale ten or more years later, and that the edition was not completely exhausted until a short time before Bentley re-published it in his "Standard Novels" at the end of 1832.
