Catalogue Note
Maleas studied with Henri Martin in Paris from 1901-1908. A fervent admirer of Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh, he would remain faithful to post-impressionist thinking throughout his career as a landscapist. His pivotal importance to Greek painting is ascribed to the assimilation of Pont-Aven Symbolism, the arabesque line and flattened space of Art Nouveau and the highly-keyed expressive palettes of Fauvism.
An authentication letter dated 29.03.83 by Fotinos Maleas, the artist's son, is attached to the reverse of the present work.
