Description

  • George Stubbs A.R.A.
  • The Anatomy of the Horse. Including a Particular Description of the Bones, Cartilages, Muscles, Fascias, Ligaments, Nerves, Arteries, Veins, and Glands. London: Printed by J. Purser, for the Author, 1766
Oblong broadsheets (17-3/4 x 22-1/4 in.; 451 x 565 mm). 24 fine engraved plates of equine anatomy by Stubbs; 3 plates and 3 text leaves with short repaired tear at inner margin, several plates with light vertical creases, a few plates and leaves with tiny holes or printer’s tears, some scattered offsetting. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards; very worn, spine largely perished, covers detached.

First edition, early issue, with the plates unwatermarked (copies with the plates watermarked as late as 1815 frequently appear). “The work appeared in 1766, and remained the standard authority on the subject for nearly a century. … It is entirely appropriate to rank The Anatomy of the Horse … among the most important of the several works of this time which, by emphasizing the importance of precise systematic observation, revolutionized men’s understanding of the natural worlds” (Lennox-Boyd).
