Catalogue Note

José Luis Díez believes this portrait of Ferdinand VII to be a high quality work from the studio of Vicente López, painted probably by one of his two sons Bernardo or Luis. The composition derives from a painting by Vicente now in the Royal Palace, Madrid (see J.L. Diez, Vicente Lopez, Madrid 1999, pp. 90-91, cat. no. P-361, reproduced plate 205), which was painted in 1830 along with a pendant of the monarch's wife Queen María Cristina (op. cit., pp. 107-08, cat. no. P-421, reproduced plate 205). Although Vicente López portrayed Ferdinand VII on numerous occasions during his career, the present type is the only portrait in which the king is depicted in casual attire, reflecting the change of customs introduced into the Palace by his fourth wife, Queen María Cristina of the Two Sicilies.
