Catalogue Note
Based upon a detail of Velázquez's celebrated equestrian portrait of Philip IV, painted by the artist by the end of April 1635 along with an equestrian portrait of Queen Isabella of Bourbon, for the Great Hall of the Buen Retiro Palace. In 1819 the portrait of Philip IV was removed to the Museo del Prado, Madrid where it hangs today (see J. López Rey, Velázquez, Catalogue Raisonné, vol. II, Cologne 1996, pp. 176, cat. no. 71, reproduced).
